On September 24th, Ho Keung and Yin Ping sent me some photos of lovely flowers of Azaleas.
I have seen some of the flowers before, mainly pink and purplish red ones because my father used to grow Azaleas in pots placed on an iron rack outside our verandah.
This kind of shrubs is tough. They grow best in spring time with many flowers blooming and at other times they just show their leaves. In winter they look lifeless, but actually they are still alive. They can bear coldness and wait for the coming spring.
Here we can see some of the species of Azaleas grown by Ho Keung and Ying Ping at their backyard in Australia. They are in bright red, pink, purplish red and white.Here was the message from the happy couple when they saw their Azaleas bloom:
“I am amazed at the Azaleas. They always bloom in Spring, which is quite amazing. Let alone they know which hemisphere they are at! When we were in Hong Kong there was Azaleas Display at Governor's House in Central around March and April, which was Spring, but here in Australia, the flowers know perfectly well that they have to show themselves to the people in September!”
To me, I love those Azaleas with insect guides!

Happy to share the photos with you. Azaleas are beautiful flowers, quite easy to grow. We have chosen the sun tolerating species and don't really have time to look after them. They just bloom when the time is right. It is a shame that some Chinese people do not like growing azaleas because of the superstition that the Chinese name relating to a sad poem. We originally grew roses in this flower bed. They were very beautiful and sophisticated but needed much attention as well as disease proned. Eventually we had to dig them all up and grew azaleas instead.
