Miss L.S. Chan has newly retired and joined our team of retirees at CCSC this September. She has taught in our school for 29 long years, almost three decades.Yesterday she was so kind as to invite us to a tea lunch at a restaurant in North Point.
We, eleven of us, including L.S. have been working hard at school for a long time as colleagues, teaching different subjects. We were under the same roof, but never did we quarrel. We respected each other and shared our thoughts, joy and worries. All through these 30 to 40 years, all of us threw ourselves wholly to the school and students with open hearts. As for me, as well as my old colleagues treated our students as our sons and daughters and friends too. Most of our students are smart, but still we found some who were lazy and lacked of eagerness to learn.
From her dress yesterday, L.S. looked as fresh as a young lady. L.S., I may say, is actually still young when compared with us at the table. She retires just because she who wants to take good care of her mother at home. What a good daughter she is!

OMG, I can't believe LS is retiring -- She is still so young!!!
And you said she has been teaching for 30 years already? Amazing.
I wish LS the best of luck and excellent health in her deserved retirement.
Felix
ps. Wat: It's very nice that you keep us posted about the meetings and whereabouts of the retired teachers. Thanks.
Felix, LS has taught for 29 years only, but she gets a year of extra pay because she has successfully obtained the "Fat Chicken" meal from Hong Kong Education Bureau.
For myself, I have served the school for 36 years!
What is "Fat Chicken" meal?
As the number of Hong Kong students decreases owing to low birth rate, the number of classes decreases. As a result, the number of teachers will be cut down. Some schools are "killed" in this way.
CCSC decides to intake only four classes of Form 1 this year and next year, the intake will go back to five Form 1 classes. The intake number of classes will change in alternate years. Such decrease of 1 class will reduce a certain number of teachers. Education Bureau creates such "Fat Chicken" meal to any teacher who is interested in quitting from his/her job. He/She may get the "meal" under the following terms.
The compensation is at most 1 year pay, depending on how near the teacher reaches the compulsory retirement age of 60. Take for example, if a teacher reaches the age of 59, he/she can only get 1/5 of the year pay; 58, 2/5; 57, 3/5; 56, 4/5 and 55, 5/5 one year pay.
I guess LS should be under 55, so she ought to get 1 full year pay for compensation in her early retirement.
I see. Thanks for elucidation.
What a new word to me!
elucidation - explanation, I think
